Use of Cell Phones or Other Electronic Devices
Research shows that student usage of E-Devices promotes critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and
other essential life skills in a highly competitive and global society. To that end, electronic devices have become
part of the educational process. Electronic devices enhance the learning experience providing access and tools for
all students. Most students and parents support their appropriate use in a school setting.
As an innovative school,
Central Kitsap High School encourages the appropriate use of electronic devices in the classroom or other school
settings. The personal use of the electronic devices must not endanger persons or property, disrupt the educational
process, or violate the publicized policy of Central Kitsap High School and the Central Kitsap School District. The
behavior of the student using the device is addressed rather than the possession of the device.
Appropriate use of electronic devices and systems enrich the teaching and learning process by permitting access to
the external references and learning tools including on-line textbooks, interpretations and simulations, personal
response systems, and other resources thereby connecting the classroom to the world. Use of electronic devices in
inextricably linked to greater success in the acquisition of skills and competencies and prepares students for postsecondary
education, the workplace and life.
Classroom use of electronic devices is subject to regulation by the teacher and must only be used for instructional
purposes aligned with curricular objectives and CKSD policies.
If electronic devices are utilized by the instructor as part of a planned instructional design, cooperative grouping will
ensures ALL STUDENTS have access to the electronic device.
The possession and use of electronic devices (E-Devices) is a privileged part of the educational experience.
The school may revoke the privilege of possessing or using E-Devices at any time at its sole discretion. E-Devices
include devices used to communicate, receive, send, store, record or listen to voice, text, digital, audio,
video, photo, electronic or internet/cyberspace data, images and/or information which shall include but not be
limited to cellular phones/smartphones, iPods, personal digital assistants (PDA’s), MP3 Players, portable music
players, tablets, laptops, CD players, game players, cameras, video cameras, GPS, etc. Central Kitsap School
District and Central Kitsap High School are not responsible for lost, damaged, stolen E-Device, programs or

- E-Devices MAY BE USED …
- During non-instructional times – before school during passing time, during the student’s lunchtime, or
- In the classroom for academic purposes at the discretion of the teacher. Teachers are encouraged to
develop lessons utilizing technology.
- When a device is authorized for use in the classroom by the instructor students WILL NOT:
- Answer incoming SMS (text) message or phone call.
- Be on any social media site (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, etc.)
- Access or play any game or access any entertainment site on their device.
- Access or use any application (app) on their device unless expressly instructed to by the
- Take or show any picture or video that the instructor has not asked for or asked to be taken or
o Upload any picture or video taken in class to any social media or website.
- SMS (text) message or email any picture or video taken in class to any person including
- Access any type of mobile web browsing for any reason unless expressly directed to do so by
- Take any picture, video, or text of any class assignments or assessments without instructor
- E-Devices MAY NOT BE USED…
in the hallway when classes are in session, in a classroom (without instructor permission), bathrooms, locker
rooms, school offices (counseling, main, ASB, security, attendance, etc.), school health room, theatre, library, or during any formal school presentation, or any school assembly. When entering any of these areas, students are expected to place all E-Devices in the “OFF” or “SILENCE” mode and store them out of sight from the teacher and other students. If an E-Device rings, vibrates, is used for any reason or is visible anytime in these locations, a staff member reserves the right to confiscate the device. Refusal to surrender you E-Device when asked is
defiance. Defiance can result in disciplinary consequences.
- Other Important Guidelines:
- E-Device use must not be disruptive to other students, staff, or to the overall school environment.
- Texting to other students while they are engaged in instructional time is prohibited.
- E-Devices must not be used in the CKHS Library without approval from library staff.
- Ear plugs or earphones must be used so that others will not be able to hear the sounds from one student’s EDevice. SPEAKERS OF ANY TYPE MAY NOT BE USED.
- In the event of a student needing to leave school due to illness (or for any other reason), students must officially check out through either the attendance office, health office, or main office with parent/guardian permission. Contacting your parent/guardian with your personal E-Devices and leaving without school authorization is considered a truancy.
- It is never acceptable to take photos or videos of other student or staff members without their permission.
- Students must never use E-Devices to bully or harass other students, faculty or staff in any way including, but not limited to, social media, text messages or phone calls. Violations of this policy will result in the immediate loss of E-Device privileges for a year. The student’s E-Device will be confiscated and not returned to the student until a parent conference is held with the student and an administrator.
- Electronic devices are not to be used during assessments, exams, or any type of testing, unless the classroom instructor has developed a specific protocol for necessitating their use.
DUE TO THE EVOLVING NATURE OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES, ADDITIONAL
RULES AND REGULATIONS MAY BE ADDED THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR
Consequences for Violation of Electronic Devices Policy
- 1st Incident — Conference with administrator (device released by office staff)
- 2nd Incident — Detention (device released by office staff)
- 3rd Incident — ISS, Parent/Guardian notified indicating next infraction requires parent pick-up of device
(device released by office staff).
- 4th Incident — Thursday school with phone call home requiring parent to pick up device. Administrator
schedules conference with student and parent. Discussion includes agreement that next and subsequent
infractions include out of school suspension.
If a student refuses to surrender an electronic device to a staff member, an administrator will be
called and the incident will be handled as “defiance.”
