Weekly Update from CKHS #11

June 13

Dear Central Kitsap High School Students and Families,

Good afternoon Cougars. We are getting close to the end of the school year. There is one week left. On behalf of our entire staff, please stay engaged in your school work and on-going learning. Teachers are sending out messages and posting in their gradebook and/or Google Classroom what students need to do to finish and earn credit this term. Over this last week teachers will be focusing communications to students who have yet to meet standards necessary to earn credit. If you are in doubt right now, the best thing you can do is communicate with your teachers.

Families who are moving and need to withdraw

If you are moving at the end of the school year and need to withdraw from CKHS, please contact our Registrar, Beth Roy.  She will help you with the withdrawal process, update addresses for report cards and help gather any information you might need to enroll in your new school.  Please contact Ms. Roy by phone at 360-662-2448 or email at bethr@ckschools.org.

Return school materials and collect personal items

We have put in place a plan for you to drop-off any school materials you may have at home, and/or pickup personal belongings that may still be at school on June 16, 17, and 18 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 PM. For all the details, here is a link to that information on our website. If you have questions or need special assistance please email our Athletic Director Bill Baxter (billb@ckschools.org). He will partner with you on the best way to safely facilitate this process with you.

For Seniors

Thank you for your participation in our Cougar Cruise and virtual Graduation ceremony this past Thursday. A full class of 2020 aerial photo was inadvertently left out of your senior packets. We will include this photo with your diploma that is mailed to you later this month.

For those of you who would like to review and purchase Cougar Cruise photos taken by Olympic Photo Group, please visit their website or use this link for direct access.

Soon we will post a video replay of our graduation ceremony on our website as well as the CKSD webpage.

Bremerton Kitsap Access Television (BKAT) will broadcast this event on Friday, June 19, at 8:30 p.m.

Diplomas will be mailed by June 30.

Please check to ensure we have your correct mailing address in Power School.

Grading Update

Students and Families, please note that teachers will submit final grades for their classes on Wednesday, June 24th.  At that time, teachers will submit either an "A" or an "I" (Incomplete) grade.  Last week, teachers began the process of formalizing contracts for students who are on track to earn an "Incomplete" for the semester.  If you receive communication from a teacher about an Incomplete Contract, we encourage you to engage directly with that teacher to meet the requirements before the end of the term for an "A" grade.

Grading Policy

This week the Central Kitsap School District updated guidelines for credit bearing courses this term. With this change:

  • Teachers will assign a grade of “A” or an “I” (incomplete) for second semester report cards.
  • No student will receive a “pass,” “fail” or “no credit” grade for any course (with the exception of students receiving special education services).
  • Attendance will not be a factor when determining student grades.
  • Every class taken during the closure period will be given a statewide designator on the high school transcript to denote the unique environment in which the course was taken.

Student grades will be grounded in compassion, equity and common sense. Our teachers will continue to focus on the same standards and learning activities that have been communicated to you. Our priority and focus remains student learning and engagement during this challenging time of school closures. If you have questions about your current grade, please contact your teacher via email.

Technology

Some students and parents have asked about Chromebook checkout, repair, or charging cords. For K-12 students who have Chromebooks or power adapters in need of repair or replacement, a form has been added to the “At-Home Learning Resources” web page. Under “K-12 Student Chromebook Repair” is a link where families can report and provide details of the repair issue. Families will receive an email communication with instructions on how to schedule a repair date and time. All repairs will be processed at the Teaching & Learning Center at Barker Creek Community School in East Bremerton. Families will remain in their vehicles and a technician will come out to assist.

This service will continue until students and staff return to buildings. The volume of drive through repairs will be monitored and adjusted accordingly.

However you may get your Chromebook issue resolved at the building level by emailing our Librarian, Steve Trunkey (STEVET@ckschools.org) or leaving him a voicemail at 360-662-2420.

Office Hours

Unfortunately, we have had to close our building.  When we are able to re-open the office we will communicate that to you as soon as we are able.  If you need assistance with anything you can call the main number (360-662-2400) and leave a message, one of our staff will return your call as soon as possible.

CKSD Providing Food

Although our schools are unexpectedly closed, we will offer free meals to all children age 18 and under. We will also provide free meals to students up to age 21 who receive special education services. Each meal will include breakfast for the next day.

You can pick up meals, from 11:00 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday at CKHS. For additional information including other pick-up locations, click here.

We are no longer asking people to fill out the form — just show up!

Next Year (School year 2020-21)

We received initial fall reopening guidance from OSPI, with additional guidance expected over the next several weeks. The expectation is that schools will open this fall for in-person instruction. Schools will have specific health and safety protocols in place, including social distancing and a requirement for cloth face coverings. We will be required to adopt a reopening plan through a school board resolution. With that in mind, CKSD have assembled a “reopening work group” for each of these five areas:

  • Academics
  • COVID-19 response
  • Facilities
  • Operations/Food Services/Transportation
  • Wellness

These groups will be working over the summer to ensure we are prepared for the challenges we’ll face in the year ahead. A critical part of these planning efforts will be hearing from you. CKSD is currently developing a survey to collect your input. Please keep an eye out for this survey!
